The name Kanga comes from a wild chicken (Guinea fawl), known as noisy or vocal. Men teased women for their communicative Kanga wear, and like it to the Kanga birds.
Kanga is wrap cloth, very popular all over East Africa and beyond. Mostly they are screen printed in Tanzanian. Traditionally, Kanga are sold in matching pairs, but in western world can be sold in single panel. Kanga is typical women wear, made in a pear. Men may wear as a leisure cloth in house or at the beach. Kanga has multiple uses for fashion, accessories or decorations.
Most kangas have an inscription in Swahili. This allows women to communicate to their neighbors, sweethearts and family about sentiments, console, encourage, to cheer up and the like. Just like what a card or a T-Shirt does.
